UMBC Fingerprint and Background Check Instructions
Step 1: Schedule an appointment with UMBC
- Contact UMBC Police at livescan@umbc.edu to request an appointment.

Step 2: Hand-sign the FBI Privacy Act Statement and Applicant Rights and Submit to HR
- Sign the form and send it electronically to hrbackground@umbc.edu
- In the email, please inform HR of your name, department you are with, and/or research/lab project. As well as the date you are scheduled to get fingerprinted.
Step 3: Complete the LiveScan-Pre-Registration form and the UMBC Police Background Check Registration
- You will need your department chart string number for payment. This will go on the UMBC Police Background Check registration form. Please contact your department for this number.
Step 4: Bring the following documents to your appointment.
- Bring the required documents and ID to the facility.

- Background check registration form (above in step 3)
- A valid government form of identification displaying your name and date of birth (Driver’s license, state-issued ID card, Passport, etc.) is required to be brought to the fingerprinting appointment.
HRSTM will notify the department once the individual has successfully completed the background check. Departments will also be notified in the event that the background check is considered unsuccessful.
Results typically take two to three business days.
Individuals may not start until all portions are complete and considered successful.
Once steps 1 – 4 are completed
Have all parties fill out the Minor Visitor Agreement Form
This includes signatures from: The minor in the lab, their parent or guardian, principal investigator for the project and the unit administrator or chairperson.
Copies of completed Agreements are to be maintained within the Office of the Unit Administrator for the applicable retention period.
